Programs

The History Department prides itself on offering students a wide variety of course topics and learning experiences. The expertise of the full-time faculty members extends across Asia, Canada, Brazil, Britain, Europe, Latin America and the United States of America. Many of our courses also contribute to other programs, such as Atlantic Canada Studies, Asian Studies, International Development Studies, Irish Studies, The School of the Environment, Spanish and Latin American Studies, as well as Women and Gender Studies.

Students should note that our courses vary in type:

• courses at the 1000 level (capped at 60) introduce the nature of historical analysis and thinking through broad surveys of geographical areas
• courses at the 2000 level (capped at 30-40) tend to focus on more specific geographical areas
• courses at the 3000 level (capped at 30) are generally thematic
• courses at the 4000 level (capped at 15) are in the format of seminars, concentrating on group discussion and the sharing of insights through student presentations
• courses at the 6000 level are graduate level seminars, concentrating on group discussion and the sharing of insights through student presentations
